Meeting your facility’s refrigerant detection needs is at the core of the latest refrigerant monitoring solutions from MSA Safety. The all-new MSA Bacharach® X30 and X50 Refrigerant Monitors have been designed to meet today’s refrigerant tracking and compliance needs in a new, streamlined suite of monitoring options. The monitors provide a comprehensive solution that allows for flexible configurations across a diverse range of HVAC-R applications. Offering the same trusted performance that you’ve come to expect from the MSA Bacharach family, the X30 and X50 will be replacing the Bacharach MGS Series of refrigerant monitors.

Why the Change

Designing the new monitors began with collecting and examining feedback from customers and installers. They want solutions that are easy to use and install, versatile, and built to meet their compliance needs with the latest sensing technology. MSA’s robust design process involved addressing these desires while condensing product offerings to a simplified format to better serve the market. The new X-series is a streamlined approach that enhances the functionality of several of the MGS Series refrigerant monitors and consolidates the product line into two models. This structure allows for simple configurations during selection and ordering, fewer part numbers to manage, and improved inventory levels and lead times for distributors and end users.

What are the Key Features of the MSA Bacharach X30 and X50 Refrigerant Monitors?

Compliance Features

The X30 and X50 fixed detectors were designed to help customers comply with today’s regulations around refrigerant gas monitoring and leak detection. Capable of assisting in compliance with regulations such as ASHRAE 15, EN 378, IIAR CO2, F-Gas Regulation, and CSA B-52, the X30 and X50 will monitor relevant gases in the ranges required to help ensure occupant safety. Both models offer broadband refrigerant detection and versatility with the choice of calibration gas. The monitors can detect A1, A2L, and natural refrigerants like CO2. The temperature range they can function in is -40°F (-40°C) to 122°F (50°C), making the platform an excellent candidate for low-temperature detection applications.

Maintenance-Friendly and Future-Ready Design

Sensors for the X30 and X50 are swappable between gas ranges and product models. This means you can easily adapt to system upgrades, expansions, or refrigerant system changes simply by replacing the sensor module. The new sensors arrive pre-calibrated to help save time. For X50 models, dual sensors can be installed to provide two unique gas sensing points or redundant detection for the same gas.

Easy Setup and Commissioning

MSA Safety examined customer feedback about setup and maintenance processes across applications for refrigerant monitors to identify trends in user experience. The X30 and X50 have been designed to enhance user experience in key areas of product interaction.

Highlights include:

  •  Intuitive PCB layout, silk screening, and lid-mounted electronics to promote simple wiring connections
  •  Enclosure compatible with metric and conduit fittings for global suitability
  • T Calibrate in minutes; maintenance is straightforward with guided calibrations and the mobile app via Bluetooth.
  •  Monitor a range of R-Gases with Broadband monitoring, or field calibrate for a specific target gas.
  • Utilize the X10 Remote Sensor to monitor as far as 100m from the base transmitter; dual gas sensing configurations available

The X30 and X50 address these challenges through creative design features which are intended to ease installation and maintenance routines. The new refrigerant monitors have lid-mounted electronics that make wiring more accessible with clear silkscreen labeling and logical layouts. There are selectable metric and conduit entry points for global suitability and optimizing for the application. Instead of gas-specific configurations, the X30 and X50 offer a broadband configuration that can be used as is or dialed in to the target gas. And to address potential damage to cables and other components, the X30 and X50 have fully redesigned enclosures and built-in protection for the printed circuit board (PCB).

Bluetooth Connectivity Enhancements

Bluetooth activation and pairing are as simple as pushing a button. The X30 and X50 pair seamlessly with a mobile app that allows the user to configure the refrigerant monitor. This includes selecting a gas type for monitoring, adjusting alarm settings, or even conducting test functions for the analog and digital outputs. The app will also alert you with calibration reminders, and it includes a calibration walkthrough procedure with visual progress and downloadable calibration certificates.

Enhanced Safety Features

If a refrigerant gas concentration or fault with the transmitter is detected, the audio and visual alerting indicators are built directly into the unit and will alert the user. This means customers may not have to purchase, wire, and install a separate horn or strobe light for code compliance purposes. The X30 and X50 are also capable of analog and Modbus digital communications to integrate into building management systems (BMS)/ building automation systems (BAS) directly. This means the units can communicate any potential issues to building control systems to activate containment, mitigation, or evacuation protocols if necessary.

The X10 Sensor

The X30 refrigerant model will support one relay for communications and mitigation, but the X50 has four relays onboard and is compatible with the MSA Bacharach® X10 Remote Sensor. The X10 sensor can be mounted up to 100 meters away from the base transmitter and is capable of detecting leaks in systems using two different refrigerant charges. It also provides the ability to measure different types of gas using two sensing technologies within one main detector.
