One of the most frequently asked questions about fall protection PPE is “Do fall harnesses have a defined expiration date or end of life?”
In the past, a five-year lifespan was the go-to guideline. However, based on current OSHA, ANSI, and CSA guidelines, the answer is not so simple.
A fall harness’s lifespan can be impacted by several factors, including:
- Snagging on protruding objects
- Coating or saturation of paints and other chemicals
- Excessive exposure to UV rays or sunlight
- Exposure to caustics and acids
- Improper storage methods
In addition, any harness subjected to a fall arrest must be taken out of service immediately. Do not use the harness after the impact event. Be sure to label it as unusable and remove from service until destroyed.
